Ancient Greece illustrated myths on vessels in red and black figure painting. This print illustrates the story of Orion in the contour of a wine vessel. The Orion Constellation looms large in the night sky during winter in the northern hemisphere. Orion was a mortal favored by the Gods whose journey spawned awe and pain. He was loved by Artemis, God of hunting. Orion boasted he could kill all the beasts on earth. Gaia, Earth Goddess, angry Orion was killing her animals, created the scorpion which kills Orion with its’ sting. Devastated Artemis pleads with Zeus who places Orion in the night sky.
