Making It
A drawing is the starting point, but original, limited edition relief and screen prints require the creation of a matrix. All matrixes are hand made and hand printed at MiraMar by the artists (carved wood or linoleum, or a stenciled screen). As the matrix is made and proofed (first prints) the final image comes together and the print created is the original piece. No prints are “reproductions” of another work, but original pieces in themselves.
The Project
The project will take about 4-6 weeks to complete. Sketches and first and final states will be shared during the process. The final image will be printed in a limited edition on archival artist quality paper. The artist will provide the marked matrix with the small edition. Payment will be expected when the final work is completed and delivered to the client. All rights to the images will be the artist’s until this time.
Pricing
Prints of various styles have their own unique look, and this is what most of us are drawn to. Another benefit is the ability to make multiple pieces to reach a wider audience and to have an original piece of art on the market at a lower price point. When we make art for our own portfolio, we can be confident about our ability to sell the full edition, and we price our work accordingly. On our website, our prints range from $25-$150 with edition sizes fo 25-100.
A commissioned piece is akin to buying the full edition because the bulk of the work for the artist is the creation of the matrix. We assume you don’t require 25 prints, and the prices are adjusted for the reduction is printing time and paper and ink materials.
